Ross Island, now officially called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Andaman Islands. British Era: The “Paris of the East” 🏛️

In 1858, following the Revolt of 1857, the British established a penal settlement in the Andaman Islands. They made Ross Island their administrative headquarters. This tiny island became a paradise for British officers, complete with luxurious homes, a church ⛪, bakery 🍞, hospital 🏥, swimming pool 🏊, and even a ballroom!

While the officers lived in comfort here, freedom fighters and prisoners were kept in the harsh conditions of Cellular Jail in Port Blair.

Nature’s Wrath & War Years 🌊⚔️

In 1941, a powerful earthquake hit Ross Island, damaging most of its structures. The British began abandoning the island. Shortly after, during World War II in 1942, Japanese forces captured Ross Island and used it as a military base. They built bunkers, tunnels, and lookout points – many of which are still visible today. 🪖

The Arrival of Netaji: A Historic Day 🇮🇳

On 30th December 1943, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose arrived at Ross Island with Japanese support and hoisted the Indian tricolour, declaring it the first territory under Azad Hind Government. This marked a historic moment in India’s freedom struggle. His visit gave new hope and inspiration to millions. Jai Hind!
