Explore Baratang Island & Jarawa Tribal History

Baratang Island & Jarawa Tribal

Welcome to Baratang Island – The Hidden Wonder of Andaman

Baratang Island, located about 100 km from Port Blair, is one of the most mysterious and fascinating destinations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It’s known for its natural marvels, tropical forests, tribal history, and ecological significance.

With Andaman Pradhan Tour and Travels, your Baratang trip will be filled with adventure, safety, learning, and fun! 🌋🛶🌳

1. Historical Background of Baratang Island 🏝️

Baratang remained largely untouched during the British colonial era due to its thick tropical forests and tribal territories. Post-independence, settlers from mainland India arrived, mainly for agricultural development.

However, the island has always maintained a delicate balance between human settlement and protected forest & tribal areas. Today, it’s part of the reserved forest region, with controlled tourism allowed by the Government of India. 🌿

2. Natural Wonders of Baratang 🌄

Baratang is famous for two major natural attractions:

A. Limestone Caves 🪨

Formed over millions of years, these caves are made of stalactites and stalagmites, beautifully sculpted by nature. Visitors reach the caves via a breathtaking mangrove boat ride through a narrow creek — a surreal and peaceful experience. 🛶🌱

B. Mud Volcano 🌋

Baratang is home to India’s only active mud volcano, caused by underground gas release from the Earth’s crust. It occasionally oozes out mud and gases, and is considered a rare natural feature. A short drive and walk will take you right up to this unique spot. 🗺️

3. The Jarawa Tribe – Guardians of the Forest 🏹🌳

The Jarawa are one of the five recognized indigenous tribes of the Andaman Islands. They are semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, believed to have lived here for over 50,000 years!

They mainly inhabit the Jarawa Tribal Reserve, which lies between South and Middle Andaman, and visitors cross this zone on the way to Baratang.

Important Note:

  • Photography, interaction, or offering food to the Jarawa is strictly prohibited. 🚫
  • Their culture is protected by law under the Andaman & Nicobar Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation (ANPATR).
  • Andaman Pradhan Tour and Travels fully respects these rules and provides a briefing to all guests. 🧭

Let’s observe and respect, not disturb.

4. Government Conservation Efforts 🛡️

Baratang and the Jarawa Reserve are eco-sensitive zones. The government has regulated tourism to protect the environment and the Jarawa tribe from outside influences. Only authorized vehicles in convoy are allowed through the tribal reserve.

Andaman Pradhan Tour and Travels is a responsible agency that follows all protocols, ensuring a safe, respectful, and enriching journey. ✅
